this time of year, I have a hunter orange lightweight fleece vest I wear while caching in areas open to hunting. Think I picked it up at Meijers for 5$ or so.

Hopefully these hunters know the difference between a cacher and a deer at this time of year. I was out today on the first day of gun season and was close to alot of gun fire. Just placing travel bugs in one of my caches.

Yea some hunters dont think before they shoot, Last year one of my best friends was mistook for a coyote and shot to death!! the guy that shot him got three months probation!!

As both a hunter and cacher, I have to agree that there is a huge safety issue around this. Unfortunately, I can't make a suggestion that covers all situations. You'll have to decide what to do in your particular circumstance. But please keep in mind:

- Even when a hunter spots you as human, he's still not going to be happy to see you. Even a cat can spook a deer, and by the time you and the hunter can see each other, your scent and noise have more than likely spoiled the hunting for at least an hour, maybe more.

- That hunter up in the tree, has been there before. He has been scouting out the spot, looking for signs of deer activity, for weeks. He's made a significant investment of time and effort to pick out a good spot for which he only has a limited amount of time to hunt. Public land or not, he may feel that you shouldn't be there.

- I wouldn't cache on private land in the woods this week, if there's hunters nearby. I'm NOT suggesting that the hunter has more rights than you - hear me out. Wear no orange and you risk being shot. But even if you wear orange, you risk having a hunter think that you are another hunter, trespassing. Whether or not he buys into the caching story or not, remember: he or she has a gun, and may not be a friendly guy like me.

The deer gun-hunting season is open through Saturday on public land, and until Sunday on private land. There are two other weekends, one in December, and one in January, when the muzzleloading gun season is open. The archery season (yes arrows can hurt people too) is open till the end of January, I think. Hunters are only required to wear orange this week. Hope this helps.

I thought over this some more and just wanted to add:
I wouldn't really worry much during the regular archery or muzzleloading seasons. It's only during the gun season this week that we need to be more careful. Gun week draws out not just the seasoned, responsible hunters, but the yahoos as well. I never really understood how you could mistake a person for game. Unless, of course, they are wearing aforementioned Rudolph suit.

I got home today and I live in the country in BIG DEER ALLY all the deer run our yard, well any way here is a good example of why to be careful I drive down our road and see a odd vehicle(I know all of the hunters in our area) wasnt someone I know, Was a road hunter shooting at deer right beside my propane tanks STUPID so I get out of my car and they run for there vehicle and speed off!!! I have already had my house shot at this year too!!!! I have no problems with hunters(my hubby and 2 brothers and father in law all hunt) but man, why do people get so crazy this week!!! its so bad here the DNR sits in my driveway!! by the way hubby got a deer already!!

I drove by a wooded area on Monday on my way home from work, it looked like a pumpkin patch.

I figure if a deer ran out of it three people would be shot since they were all facing each other.

yea on monday my brother in law was in competion with hunters across the feild and they werent paying attention so bro left, no one around here seems to pay attention I think they need to start taping bicycle flags to their heads too orange isnt bright enough!!
