Have we picked a place? Any suggestions?

No location or date has been picked as we have no real functional Steering Committee at the moment.

We can of couse still have a Xmas event hosted by NWOGEO, however it is going to require the general membership to step up and take the lead.

Rather than create a special hidden forum on here (as usual) for the discussion of the event planning, I think we should attempt it right here for everyone to see and volunteer for.

I've been sitting on this info because I didn't want to do this myself, and we have no structure to submit it to. However, since there is some interest now (thank you), here it is.

Park: W.W. Knight Nature Preserve More Info.
Facility: W.W. Knight Nature Center:Hankison Great Room (More Info.)
Date: December 7, 2008
Time: 9:00am - 10:00 pm
Notes about facility: 42-acre preserve with pond, wetland, native prairie, woods
Boardwalk and trails
2 non-reservable picnic gazebos, and
Nature Center with reservable Great Room, library and meeting room.

Available year-round
9:00 a.m - 10:00 p.m.
Serving kitchenette.
Heat and air conditioning.
Propane fireplace.
Alcohol permitted in Great Room only with purchase of alcohol permit.
To book Monday - Thursday, please call Park District Headquarters at (800) 321-1897 within Wood County or (419) 353-1897. Otherwise, you will pay the weekend rates.

To add hours after 10:00 p.m. - $50/hour. Call Headquarters for this.

Capacity: 100

We can get this for $187 (Wood County resident price) plus I'd have to buy a Friends of the park membership for $20, plus I'd have to pay an alcohol permit. and use my home owners insurance. So, :
187
+20
$207 Plus the alcohol permit (or not) and I don't know what that is yet.
Out of pocket plus a refundable deposit if we don't trash the place.

This is cheap.
Not as cheap as the deals I got in 2006 and 2007, but check around and you will find out.

I have the money in the NwoGeo account at the Good Dog Bank and Trust (which the Feds are NOT taking over  ) and could reserve this.

Let me know if there is an interest. I would want to check out the facility, and have some other eyes and opinions do so with me. Let me know.

This is quick, but I have reserved the room. Someone needs to go out there Wed. between 7 and 8pm to check it out. I'm sure it's ok, but I have to be at work. We can cancel if we don't like it. I'll go to the HQ this afternoon and buy the Friends pass and see what the alcohol fee is.

Never mind. It turns out they only have open visitation the first wednesday of the month. I'll hook up with a ranger next week and check it out.

Also it will cost almost $250 for a damage deposit and alcohol permit, and I'd still be liable for any problems. So, no Grandma's Green Punch this year. Sorry, I'll miss that. I (we) paid for a friends membership -$20, but that and me living in Wood County saves us about $263. I will keep a running total and post the accounting as usual.

Someone might want to start working on a GC web page. We shouldn't post it until I check out the shelter, and it gets a little more fall-ish. A nice winter background stuff would be nice.

I looked at the building when I was looking for the cache. I went inside, and remember a meeting room and thought about the Christmas party, but that was a couple of years ago. It IS a nice place, but I don't remember a lot about the room...

I'm going over there at 1pm today if anyone wants to join me. Here is a link to the room:WW Knight-Hanskins room building and floor plan

It looks like a great floor plan, and I'm sure it will be fine, but I want some eyes on the ground.

I just got back from checking the building. It will do just fine. Similar to Olander and Oak Openings, except it doesn't begin with an O. The room is about the same size, but the kitchen is smaller, Just a sink, re frig and microwave, and serving counter. We would have to set up additional tables to serve. A benefit is that the nature center rooms will be open to the general public, but also us. We might have to assign a bouncer if the food smells too good.
The NC rooms are three small rooms, but two of them have couches and chairs. We couldn't take food or drink in there, but it's nice to be able to wander. Large deck and front porch if the weather is good.
Nice lobby area, and there is space for a check in table without clogging up the entryway. We might want to bring a small table so we don't have to use one of theirs.

Other stuff:
>20 -8ft tables
>chairs with chair carts
>WiFi
>We need to clean up. This consists of putting tables and chairs away, wiping them down (bring our own rags and maybe a small bucket with soap) They take out trash and sweep the floor.
>Some decorations allowed, but no balloons, or nails. I think our usual table stuff, maybe a few lights , tree etc.
>Nice nature trails
>Temporary caches allowed. I had to assure them they would be in appropriate places, so he is trusting we do it right.
>I forgot a camera, but maybe someone could stop by and take a picture of the outside and send it to Gizmo.
>No stage like Olander, and more contemporary looking. If we had a band we would crowd them into a corner.
>The Nature Center rooms are open everyday and you can look into the room from the lobby or from the back deck. Check it out.

Great work Good Dog. Thanks for coming to the rescue again. I'll help in any way I can, although my talents are very limited (just ask anyone).
