You can't "Find" an Event, it's not an option. I tried logging a second Attended on an old Event and it did advance my Event Cache total. It's not what I would do personally but doing it or not doesn't matter to me.

Wow, fourteen minutes later and TheBearclaws has the anwser!

I just noticed his reply to GoodDog, and I had a feeling he tested it, since I got an email on my phone that someone was logging a Meet & Eat for last March!

I'm sure I remember that "Find" used to be an option for Events. I never thought of why it should be there until our discussion here.

Maybe GC needs another option, "Found a Temp cache while at Event" and let it count towards caches found.

So letting people log multiple events "Attended"s will be a little messy in that it will skew their stats. So we can always put this idea to a poll if want to do it.

I doubt that GC.com would ever do that. In certain (other) areas, logging multiple finds on any hide/event/CITO is bad form.

What would be wrong with making them permionate and then archiving them after the event?

That was attempted in the past unsuccessfully. Keystone will site this provision of the cache hiding requirements posted on GC.com:

Cache Permanence
When you report a cache on the Geocaching.com web site, geocachers should (and will) expect the cache to be there for a realistic and extended period of time. Therefore, caches that have the goal to move ("traveling caches"), or temporary caches (caches hidden for less than 3 months or for events) most likely will not be published. If you wish to hide caches for an event, bring printouts to the event and hand them out there.

We realize that it is possible that a planned long-term cache occasionally becomes finite because of concerns with the environment, missing or plundered caches, or the owner’s decision to remove the cache for other valid reasons. Please do your best to research fully, hide wisely, and maintain properly for a long cache life.

I thought there was a good reason, I just didn't know what it was. Now I do. Thanks

I heard back from one of the rangers at the park district about placing temporary vs. permanent caches for the event.

Placing temp. caches for that event is no problem, as long as they do not disturb or damage anything on site and are just for the day. Please place them close to the existing trails so that we have as little disturbance to the natural areas as possible.
You can visit our website to apply online for a permanent cache for the park. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call me.

So, temp caches are fine. If we choose to pursue placing permanent caches, we'll need to apply for a Wood Co. Park District permit.

I would like to try for a couple permanent ones in the park since it's such a nice area. In addition to that, a few temporary ones would be great as well. There are plenty of areas outside the park and in Perrysburg where we could hide more permanent caches. A few others expressed an interest in helping place caches for the event so I guess we just need to figure out who all wants to help, then where to go from there.

Yogi and I just got back form the LoCo Fall event and they had 60 temp caches. From the replies I saw on the GC event page, it appears most people hunted at least some. There is no need for anywhere that many, but I think some would be fine. The nice thing about temps is that GC guidelines for distance to another cache don't apply.

Sounds like we had several people at the meet and greet agree to help with caches for this.

Two things.:
> Is anyone hiding caches (temps or permanent), and are you coordinating with each other?

> At the Christmas party in Mich. a few years ago, we had a scavenger hunt. It was a big hit with the kids, and even some adults. Lynn ran across the questions, and they could be updated for this year. This is a simple project that can be done from home. I can send you the questions that were asked as a sample. Any takers? Good chance to be involved.

Unfortunately we won't be able to head up placing caches/caching activities for the event. We've been out of town for the last week and will be out of town again for Thanksgiving. Also Mrs. PBZ's work hours are changing and there's just too much going on right now that we don't have the time to commit to this :( Can someone else please step up and take over cache placement & activities? We will try and still help place some caches for the event but unfortunately can't commit to heading up this area.

Thanks to all the other volunteers and we're still looking forward to being a part of this year's shindig :)

I finally had a chance to head out to the event facility today and between the pooch and I, we can find placement for 2 maybe 3 temporary caches. These caches can be immediately next to an exisiting trail or in an area that will not be destructive to anything. Of course, this makes them easy finds, but no one wants to tear up the park or snag any Holiday sweaters (no bushwacking Jslagle).

I was going to contact P-burgZoo and ask who is doing what, but maybe this is a bit more "out there" than I thought. I figured if a couple of people placed 2 or 3 caches, we would be in business. Now I am a bit concerned at what may be a lack of caches to hunt for guests. I am going to create some temporary cache pages (2 or 3) and tell Keystone to hold off on publishing them until the morning of the event. I assume if any other caches are waiting to be published and they are on top of each other, they will be rejected and notification will be made. On the other hand, I thought I read that if they are temporary caches, the distance between them doesn't really matter. That would help as this park isn't really that large in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it is a great park and I love what they have done with it.

I have never been involved in anything like this before, so please express any opinions or concerns anyone may have. I am green and I welcome any help. If push comes to shove, I can head up the placement of caches...if the blind leading the blind is okay.

I will be out of town for a couple of days next week, but I will try to watch this topic.

Thx!

Don't contact Keystone on any temp caches.
Temp caches don't go thru GC. You just hide them, write them up on Word or something, and then hand out a sheet at the event. No GC rules apply, but common sense is required. So, no distance issues etc. To find them, the cacher logs the event multiple times, stating the name of each cache. Temp caches can be anywhere, so don't limit yourself to just the park.

Thanks for picking up the ball.

Okay! I guess that temp cache thing makes a bit more sense now. You say common sense is required? Dang it all! I will see what I can do. Thx!

Second plea.
This is easy, you can do it in your underware sitting in front of the computer. All that is required is a little local caching insight found from hunting area caches, and some cacher knowledge gleaned from meet/eats etc.

Sample questions:
> Get the signature of the oldest cacher (in GC terms) in the room.

> How many people in a cheech gang?

> Find a pinecone

> get the name of 5 geodogs.
> other things they could find by a walk in the preserve, or a trip to the Nature Room.
