Copyright issues and geocaches

Post by TeamMina »

We learned last night that you cannot list and entire song's lyrics on a cache page. Geocaching allows only one chorus and one verse, or the cache cannot be published.

At least it's an easy fix (unless you based a mystery on it). :)

Those songs are over 30 years old, maybe they are considered public domain now??

As long as you give the songwriter proper credit for the song, then there is no liability. But I see GC's point by just avoiding the whole thing and saying that you can only use that much of a song.

I remember back around 1990 my college film class final project required making a music video. However, it had the caveat that you had to have permission, or legal rights, to use whatever music you intend to, even with the projects having little chance to be seen by others than classmates & family.

Of course, who ever imagined something like youtube coming along which pretty much throws that control of copyrighted music out of control.

Copyright limitations are the life of the author plus 30 years after the death of the author. Wow....I ACTUALLY remembered that from a class I taught 2 weeks ago! :o
