Haunted Holcomb
GC1EA9P Haunted Holcomb south of Pemberville. Has anyone attempted this cache lately? I was there yesterday, and I could not stand to be there for 2 minutes. There are rotting deer carcasses all over & the stench is enough to make you sick! I can STILL smell it! Just a warning - do NOT take your geo-dog or kids over there as there are ticks & it just REEKS awfully! Hopefully the county/township will clean these up soon, but it's not a major road, so I doubt it. Fair warning for all cache seekers!
Re: Haunted Holcomb
That place is like a regular dump site. My crew has attempted that one a few times as it is right down the road for us and we still have not actually looked for it for one reason or another. I agree with your post on GC.com, it needs to be disabled for a while.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
I did that one a while back and the container wasn't too far from the dead deer. At least I didn't have to move one to find the cache. Being a hunter I didn't get bothered too by what was there and it really didn't smell too bad but everyone is different. I would say look for it about mid September. If I was the owner I would either archive it or move it slightly away from the dumping site.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
I found that one the end of March. The smell wasn't bad at that point. Yes dead deer and bones all around. I fully agree with YUK!

Re: Haunted Holcomb
In April we attempted it and it was awful. We also got 5-6 ticks on us for our < 10 minutes of effort. I have a feeling I won't be attempting that one again until I know things have been cleaned up. Which I don't see being any time soon.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
I haven't been there, but it sounds like a place the county or some government entity uses for disposing of deer. There is actually a place at Oak Openings, sort of a secret, that is used for the same purpose. I don't know why anyone would want to put a cache there.

Thanks for the warning.

I drove near there today. I'm glad I had read this thread before. I can see how the owner may have unwittingly placed the cache when there were no deer there, but the MULTIPLE comments since then should have caused some concern.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
When I was scouting a loctation for the travelbug hotel on I-80 I discovered one of these spots. They had a hole though so that when it was full they could bury them.
Took one look and decided to place it elsewhere.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
There was nothing awful at the cache site when I grabbed it October 6, 2008. Just the spooky little children pointing at the cache and the people with pitchforks and torches coming out of the woods. I am glad that I did not experience what recent cachers have found here. That would not be any fun. We will see what becomes of this cache. It is a spooky place, I guess the addition of decaying carcasses just adds to the spook factor.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
I found one pile of bones, one rotting carcass, and one cache. If this was a county dumping place I would have expected more residents. The cache should be moved regardless.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
From her profile she is a caching "buddy" of a group of "locals". I'm sure one of them could easily move it for her.

Re: Haunted Holcomb
Poor cacher... she sure has been through alot with the comments here and on GC.com
As long as this cache is not a health hazard leave it up to the next cacher to decide if and when they want to hunt this cache.
As for this dude, I'd rather see and smell rotting deer than the thousands of mosquitos I had encountered on my hunt there (TWICE).
Oh well...lets wait and see what happens
