what do you take caching

Post by sm_geo »

What do you take with you when you go geocahing besides your gpsr (or smart phone) and a writing utensil? Anybody have a "Bat Utility Belt" of some kind that contains some other interesting items you think you may need on a cache?

I ALWAYS carry a hiking stick which is used less for hiking and more for poking.

My bag generally stays in the car, but it has batteries, flashlites, pens, bug spray, and leatherman tool, and tick removal tool.

GPS, iphone, a couple of handiwipes, a drawstring bag w/TBs & pathtags if it's a bit of a walk from the geomobile.
And most importantly, the geodog in the lead.
We would like to use our walking sticks, but Mina thinks they're toys.

Hand sanitizer, leatherman tool, tweezers (for lucust tree slinters), flash light, and pen/pencil.

I try to take a camera. I made a caching trip a few months ago and saw three bald eagles and none of them were close enough to capture with my phone camera.

Batteries, flashlights, spare GPSr or an iPad or two, notepad, pathtags/travel bugs, plus an inkpad and stamp. The geomobile has hand sanitizer, first aid kit, mirrors, tweezers, ropes, assorted spare cache containers, swag, log sheets, ziplock bags, bug spray, and occasionally a metal detector and/or bore scope. Just the standard stuff. Plus some bottled water in the trunk during summertime, and assorted puppy gear and snacks. A canoe also makes an occasional appearance as needed :D

You never know when you might need a rope - it has been a big help quite a few times :-)
The borescope? Not as helpful as you might expect...

ApathyKandi cached for several months with no GPSr or smart phone or printer - they would bring up the caches on google maps, then take a cellphone picture of the computer screen and hit the trail. They did surprisingly well :-)
